Mires Beck Nursery and Expansion

Mires Beck Nursery in North Cave is a registered charity training adults with learning disabilities about horticulture and production of trees, wildflowers and perennials that are grown on site. They grow over 25 varieties of mainly British sourced species and are proud to support the Humber Forest deliver exceptional quality trees for our county and beyond.

Earlier this year, the charity won the North of England Rural Business Award for charities.

Every week, nearly 100 adults are learning about and producing extremely high-quality trees and plants through the local authority adult services.

This type of work gives the service users real purpose and improves their mental and physical abilities during their time in the fresh air and green spaces at the charity.

They now have two young tree nurseries, after recently opening a new site in Pocklington in February 2022. The tree nurseries have been split into growing cell-grown nut varieties at Pocklington and cell-grown seed varieties at North Cave. The nursery at Pocklington has potential to expand significantly in the future, with therapeutic benefits of the rural location.

On average, each season they now carry around 300,000 cell grown trees. Producing cell-grown trees was a route they took to ensure planting was able to be happen longer into the season; an established soil ball around the roots in the cell holds more water and nutrients.

The trees are graded for their root and stem quality for every order and every tree nursery service user is personally involved in this procedure.

Humber Forest is proud to support Mires Beck as a major supplier, their ethos, and their positive impact on the community. By using Humber Forest funding for planting sites, we can help support local businesses and charities, and spread the community benefits further beyond the actual trees.
